It’s Been a long journey to finding and refining my style, a journey that i know is nowhere near over. There have been a lot of journeys in my life, and while most of them started with beer, this one started with cookies. Though I do wonder what my art would look like if it had started with beer. . .
“What if i use a piping bag with paint instead of icing?” this was the first painting i did to test that. There were a lot of technical issues to figure out. As you can see, the paint didn’t hold the flowers shape very well.
After a lot of trial and error, i started to figure out how to do it. Unfortunately paint is very sticky compared to frosting, and i decided to use it for less detailed things going forward, like leaves and stems. It works great for that!
In a similar painting, i used polymer clay instead for both flowers and leaves. I saved the piping bags for the stems and flower buds.
Here’s an example of how i use the paint leaves and stems as a glue to hold polymer clay flowers, mushrooms, moss and other items to the canvas. This works great as polymer clay will melts hot glue over time, destroying the bond.
This gigantic paintings was a messy in between phase where i still wasn’t sure how to execute this properly. I’ve learned that any 3D elements must be added to the frame or the foreground so it doesn’t look odd like this does. This painting deserves a modern upgrade. It’s on my list of things to do. I really love it but the flowers and leaves could be incorporated better.
So, now i wanted a ledge that i could sculpt and put things on instead of placing them randomly on the canvas. That’s where these sign boards came in. I also could not figure out how to frame these paintings without damaging the 3D parts, these accomplished both. However, they were a pain to use and the sizes were limited. Each one had to be hand sanded for a good 30 minutes to an hour depending on the size, before paint would stick. This was still not ideal but i do still use them on occasion.
Okay, getting warmer now but still not great. This was the first and last time i made a frame out of wood. Turns out I’m not a carpenter. This frame is held together with spit and a prayer. Somehow i also messed up the measurements, but i was able to hide that under the moss. . . . . . . kinda
While making the painting i’m working on in my photo, i realized, i don’t need a ledge. i can use the same technique that i used to make this tree and put it around the edges of an entire canvas.
That brings me to what my work looks like today, well at least some of it. I don’t do all my paintings like this because they are impossible to ship. That’s something i’ve been working on. As of right now, these types of paintings are for sale locally. However, if you don’t live near Boca Raton FL and would like to commission a painting like this, i would be happy to work with you to come up with a design that can survive being shipped. You can find more examples of these on my mixed media page.
